Single mother and dreamer Loretta Boskovic lives in Gunapan, a town lost in the scrubby Australian bush. She has fantasies about dumping her two kids in the orphanage and riding off on a Harley with her dream lover. Her best pal is a crusty old junk man called Norm. She needs a lawnmower; he gives her two goats called Terror and Panic. Loretta's a self-dubbed 'old scrag', but she's got a big heart and a strong sense of injustice.

So, when the government threatens to close down Gunapan's primary school, and there's a whiff of corruption wafting through the corridors of the local council, Loretta stirs into action. She may be short of money, influence and a fully functioning car, but she has loyal friends. Together they can organise protests, supermarket sausage sizzles, a tour of the abattoir - whatever it takes to hold on to the scrap of world that is home.

Even though I was not very knowledgeable about some Australian words and phrases I was able to understand their meaning and found them fun to read. The story was quite humorous.

The Fine Colour of Rust (Audible Audio Edition) P A O'Reilly Catherine Milte Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews

My husband Charles and I read many author that are new to us for story, characters, and content. We have visited the Australian Outback with its galahs, sounds, and have battled the mozzies and flies. Determination and "get it done" are trademarks of our friends from Perth to Queensland. We have passed through many towns in Australia which have limited services, and likened them to towns devastated by giant box stores with downtowns lost to development.

The Color of Rust is a "Must Read." The story is fun while tackling a serious subject. O'Reilly characters are strong and stubborn. We will add her to our "authors to look for" in the local library.

This was a really fun book to read, I laughed out loud several time while reading it. What I liked the most about the book were the characters. Every single character was quirky and interesting and I loved reading about the whole crazy lot of them. The main character is Loretta, a single mom trying to make it on her own. She was far from perfect but tries her best and I loved her for it. She gets herself into some sticky situations that will have you either laughing or crying right along with her.

O'Reilly does a wonderful job of bringing the little town of Gunapan to life. I do not read a lot of books set in Australia and I found all the little details put into the book really added to the story.

The story is funny, heartwarming, and a great read that I think anyone would enjoy. If you enjoy books about small town life than this book is definitely for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this unique, laugh-out-loud funny and insightful novel by Australian author Paddy O'Reilly.

From the back cover

"Set in the Australian bush, a wryly funny, beautifully observed novel about friendship, motherhood, love, and the importance of fighting for things that matter.

"Loretta Boskovic never dreamed she would end up a single mother with two kids in a dusty Australian country town. She never imagined she'd have to campaign to save the local primary school. She certainly had no idea her best friend would turn out to be the crusty old junk man. All in all, she's starting to wonder if she took a wrong turn somewhere. If only she could drop the kids at the orphanage and start over . . . But now, thanks to her protest letters, the education minister is coming to Gunapan, and she has to convince him to change his mind about the school closure. And as if facing down the government isn't enough, it soon becomes clear that the school isn't the only local spot in trouble. In the drought-stricken bushland on the outskirts of town, a luxury resort development is about to siphon off a newly discovered springwater supply. No one seems to know anything, no one seems to care.

"With a dream lover on a Harley unlikely to appear to save the day, Loretta needs to stir the citizens of Gunapan to action. She may be short of money, influence, and a fully functioning car, but she has good friends. Together they can organize chocolate drives, supermarket sausage sizzles, a tour of the local slaughterhouse--whatever it takes to hold on to the scrap of world that is home."

A single mom myself, I could well relate to this Loretta's struggles and conflicts. She loves her children unconditionally, yet occasionally indulges in hilarious fantasies about making them disappear and running away with the man of her dreams. Take this, for example, this thought which runs through her head when her sister offers to take the children off her hands during Easter holiday.

"This will be my first holiday from the children in eleven years. I can see myself transformed. The pudge has magically fallen from my hips and I'm wearing a long, slinky silk dress. I'm in the function room of the golf course, tossing my newly blond-streaked hair and full of ennui or some other French feeling at these boring rich men crowding around me. I'm certain something like this will happen when I'm child-free. All I need to do is stop eating immediately."

At the same time, despite her situation and its limited opportunities, we can see that Loretta wouldn't really trade her life with anyone's and is deeply committed to her friends, family and community and will stop at nothing to protect the home she loves and the people who live there. For an escape to the Australian outback with a woman who is definitely BFF material, I highly recommend this book! Five shining stars!

Even if only in story.... I liked it too and would go back! I also liked the family that the story was centered around. The mother, Loretta, reminded me of Erin Brockovich. She knows that there is an injustice going on and she tries to stop it. With it being about nature and development is where I draw lots of similarities.
I hope another book comes with Loretta and Justin falling in love. That is literally the only way this story could get sweeter.
I admit, I liked the story. That's given. It was a new place, a fresh bunch of characters, but it didn't blow me away. There was a whole lot of running around trying to save things, but I didn't really see a lot of saving. It was mostly the road to get there and then nothing. That was disappointing. I want to know if all ends well, and I never will.
Oh, well. I still met a great family who knew many wonderful people. Norm and Justin were the closest to Loretta, but there was a bunch more too. The dynamic of the people made it a decent read.
An easy read, not a page turner, but enjoyable. A single mother living in a small town in Australia with stresses of finances, an ex husband, teen and pre-teen children, community/political concerns and a friendships, new and old. One can easily relate to her struggles.
Underlines the problems of a woman trying to raise children and still be a community activist. The dead-beat father comes back and continues to disappoint his daughter. The ending was far fetched and I felt "how can I wrap this up quickly and get out of this situation?" was the authors intention.
This is a fun story, well written. Anyone who grew up in a small town can relate to the quality and quantity of 'characters' in the book. Another book I hated to see end.
Even though I was not very knowledgeable about some Australian words and phrases I was able to understand their meaning and found them fun to read. The story was quite humorous.
